Plumbing problems have a habit of getting more expensive the longer they're left alone. A few warning signs are worth acting on right away, before a minor repair turns into a much bigger one.
Water stains on ceilings or walls. A yellow-brown stain almost always means water is getting somewhere it shouldn't, even if you can't see a leak directly. By the time it's visible, it's often been happening for a while.
Slow drains in more than one fixture. A single slow drain is usually a local clog. Multiple slow drains at once — especially if they're on the same floor — can point to a blockage further down the line, which is a bigger job to clear.
Unusually high water bills. A sudden jump in your water bill with no change in usage is one of the most reliable signs of a hidden leak, often in a spot you'd never think to check, like a toilet that's silently running or a pipe inside a wall.
Low water pressure that came on suddenly. Pressure that's always been low might just be your municipal supply. Pressure that drops suddenly is more often a sign of a partial blockage, a failing pressure regulator, or a leak somewhere in the system.
Discoloured water, especially after the home has sat unused. Brownish water when you first turn on a tap after a trip can be a sign of corroding pipes, particularly in older homes. It's worth having looked at rather than just running the tap until it clears.
None of these need to be an emergency to be worth a call. Catching a small problem early is almost always cheaper than waiting for it to become a big one.
