$300 – $800
Professional interior painting in Ontario typically runs $300 to $800 per room, with the average landing around $500 for a standard-sized room with walls and two coats.
Room size and type both move the price. A small room runs $350 to $500. A standard 12×12 bedroom runs $400 to $700. A primary bedroom runs $550 to $850, and a living room — usually larger, with more wall area and often higher ceilings — runs $600 to $1,000. A bathroom, despite being small, often lands in a similar range to a bedroom ($200 to $400) because of the trim and cutting-in work involved.
The ceiling usually isn't included by default. Adding a ceiling typically adds $80 to $150 per room — worth asking about explicitly if you assumed it was part of a "whole room" quote.
For a whole-home project, pricing usually shifts to a per-square-foot basis: $2 to $3 per square foot for a full-house repaint. Single rooms are priced higher per square foot (closer to $5) because setup and cleanup time barely changes whether the room is small or large — most of the cost is in prep and cutting in, not in how much paint gets rolled on.
What actually separates a $300 quote from an $800 one for the same size room
Prep work is the single biggest factor. A room with clean, undamaged walls needing a straightforward two-coat repaint costs far less than one needing patching, sanding, stain-blocking, or a colour change from dark to light (which often needs an extra coat). Ask any quote to itemize prep and primer separately from the topcoat — it's the clearest way to see what you're actually paying for.
